Today's work environment can compromise eye health.
Today's work environment can compromise eye health. True for everyone - Especially top female executives and female entrepreneurs. Here's why female business leaders should prioritize vision care...
Why don't female business leaders give eye health the attention it needs?
If you’re trying to become more mindful about your wellbeing, then it’s time to take a closer look at a part of your body that you might not have given too much thought. We’re talking about your eyes.
Your eyes are just as vulnerable to a range of risks as any part of your body, yet we don’t often talk about eye health until it’s too late. Here are six tips to help female business leaders optimize eye health and vision care.
Live A Healthy Life
First, some general life advice. Like every part of your body, the development and nourishment of your eye is dictated by what you eat. Vision problems like age-related macular degeneration have been linked to lower levels of:
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
- Zinc
- Omega-3 fatty acids
Smoking has been shown to increase your chances of experiencing damage to your optic nerve. Quitting smoking and eating a well-rounded diet are both keys in protecting your eyes.
Don't Miss Your Check-Up
Simply put, if you don’t know what state your eye health is currently in, you can’t know whether or not you’re doing enough to take care of them.
Arrange an eye test with your local optician. If you haven’t been in a few years, make sure you know whether or not you’re in need of a pair of prescription glasses or if your prescription has changed. Eye tests don’t need to be an annual occurrence, but you should try to keep up with them every few years.
Once you have your prescription, you can keep glasses cost-effective and stylish with cat eye glasses found in online stores. Buying directly from your optician can often be more pricey, but investigate your options.
Protect Your Eyes From The Sun
Do not underestimate the damage that can be caused by the ultraviolet light given off by the sun. Too much exposure to UV light has been shown to increase your chances of macular degeneration as well as cataracts. As such, it’s important that when you’re out in the sun, you’re protecting your eyes.
In most cases that mean wearing a pair of sunglasses. When you choose sunglasses, pick a pair with actually noting the UV protection on them. Otherwise, they will tint your vision, but they won’t keep out any UV light.
Wraparound lenses are particularly effective at protecting your eyes from all sides, so consider them if you travel frequently or are outdoors a lot.
Give Them Some Respite
Dry eyes can lead to:
- Discomfort
- Stinging
- Watering
And an inability to see temporarily properly. There is a range of things that can cause dry eyes:
- Lack of sleep
- Keeping your eyes too close to the monitor
- Body dehydration
If you have been experiencing dry eyes, then it might be worth getting some eye drops. Most eye drops that you find in your local store don’t have any active ingredients, they are just drops of benign liquid. Following the directions can help you wash out your eyes and lubricate them so you experience less discomfort.
Watch Out For Blue Light
As mentioned, dry eyes can be very uncomfortable. Eyestrain might not lead to permanent damage in the short-term, but there are concerns that it can impact your sight if you experience it for too long.
The blue light that is emitted by:
- Computer monitors
- Tablets
- Digital TVs
- Smartphones
Has been proven to cause:
- Eyestrain
- Blurry vision
- Dry eyes
- Headaches
Look away from the screen every now and then. Additionally, avoid exposing your eyes to blue light too close to the end of the night. It has been shown to dramatically affect your ability to easily get to sleep.
